It’s Been A While….

Hey friends!

I am still around. Things are crazy busy between my MPA (I ended my first semester with 2 A’s!!), working 2 jobs, freelancing, volunteering with my board and trying to keep my head above water. Husband graduated with his MBA in December and started his Doctorate this month. Needless to say, we’ve been keeping very busy since we have no children still.

To be fair, we did stop the foster license process back in August when I was beginning my Master’s classes. We do have a contingency plan in the instance of getting the opportunity to parent.

What we’ve been up to since the last post (I know, I always do these..)

  • We celebrated 5 years married on 10-10-10!
  • We found out we are having a NEPHEW(!!) in February from my baby brother and his girlfriend. For our longtime readers, they came to Vegas with us for our wedding.
  • I got a new laptop – only a big deal to my techies, but it’s lighter and smaller which means I can throw it in my bag and carry it with me everywhere to do homework and freelance work.
  • My Foster association created a petition to help foster children and within the 1st day we got over 1,000 signatures! We have surpassed 5,600 to date.
  • I became active in the Miami Geek Girls Brunch chapter and made awesome new geeky friends.
  • Puppykins developed a horrible ulcer in her eye and had to wear a cone for a month. She hated it and slept the best in her life the day we removed the cone.
  • Met. Richelle. Mead. Only one of my all time authors on the planet!
  • Decided to leave Miami. Like for real this time. There may be a slight bump in the plans, but I can’t discuss it at the moment.
  • Met Peter Davidson.
  • Met Jenna Coleman.
  • Met Billie Piper.
  • Meeting Matt Smith tonight!

I feel bad saying I’ll post more and then not. But I will try

October

You know when things are meant to be the universe makes sure you know it? Well I was working on our Timeline and digging for when we met and other key dates in my Livejournal. It turns out that Husband and I spoke for the very first time on the phone (after chatting online for 2+ months) on October 10, 2007.

We were married exactly 3 years later on October 10, 2010.

Thanks universe. You rock.

I wouldn’t be all that surprised if we finalize our adoption this October since it seems to be our lucky month.

Adoption Search Terms

I have got to check my search terms more in the future bc this happened in the last month:

  • “becca blog in Miami”
  • owls representing children tattoo”
  • “becca friends orlando fl”
  • “adoption of twins or triplets blogs”
  • “104,000 foster care children”
  • “do i have to take pride classes if i have non relative placement of a friends child in my home to adopt in florida”
  • “family paperwork infographic
  • A handful of “knit wedding veil” and about a dozen variations of “becca blogs

Some of theses are pretty amusing and I’m still baffled that they led to my little blog.

By far, my most visited post is the one about Apple Butter. Even before I posted the link to Pinterest, it got several hits a day. And now, I’m breaking 100 hits a day. Oh Pinterest, I do love thee.

Canvas Prints: Help Us Pick, Please

Hello friends!

So, our one year wedding anniversary is coming up in about a week (I know, right?!) and I finally decided to make the canvas that I have been wanting for oooohhhhh a year. And what does that mean to you? It means I’d like you to please help me decide which photo to pick.

Yes, yes, there are a lot of them, but I just love them all! Issues, I have them. There were 11 of them, but I broke it down to these 5. The first 2 were taken on our wedding day right after we were pronounced Mr & Mrs by Trey at Scenic Las Vegas Weddings. The last 3 were taken at our Trash the Dress session 2 days later by Jessie and Jason of The Emerics. Can’t you see why I’m so torn??

If you want to see them larger, clicky clicky. 🙂

I love all these pics! Actually, I currently have Three as my iPhone screen picture and Four is my computer desktop picture.

2 Years Ago Today…

Have you noticed Facebook’s new feature in the upper right corner of some pages stating something like “On This Day In 2009” with your status from that day? As I was reading and commenting on my post about wanting to be a mommy, I noticed that 2 years ago I booked our wedding.

I remember that day. I was so happy to have booked the most popular day of the year in Las Vegas. Little did I know that we would have the owner of the company as our photographer.

We ended up with well over the 100 pictures. In the end, our ceremony was in our tower hotel suite at the Luxor and the photos were in front of the fountains at The Bellagio. I will never forget that “Your Song” by Elton John was playing during the pictures. <3

Reception… Beginning Recap

The party has come… and gone! It’s over. 3+ months of planning and it was a lot of fun and turned out absolutely gorgeous. We had tons of compliments about the food, yard, and set up.

My parents and younger brother Dan, Dan’s girlfriend Cathy, and her mom, were such a tremendous help to us in setting up and decorating everything. We were able to borrow the tables and chairs from Dan’s union hall and from Cathy’s family. It is so amazing to have had all their help with the entire day.

I know y’all are expecting an update from the party, but I’m just so bummed over the pictures that I have no energy to even begin the post. As it turns out, that amazing professional photographer was a no show. Yes, I should have booked my own photographer. Lesson learned. Doesn’t make it suck less.

I shall leave you with this [heavily edited/lightened] picture while I edit, crop and try to salvage the rest of the pictures…

Finally… Party Time!

Tomorrow is the day. Finally. We’ve been planning this party/ wedding reception for a little under 3 months. Ya know, had to bask in the glow of our wedding/ Vegas trip for a few weeks. 😉

Tomorrow I get to see all the family I haven’t seen in ages, even the estranged half that, quite frankly, shocked me by saying they were coming. I get to see friends flying and driving in from all over the country to celebrate with us.

Tonight we are celebrating my amazing husband’s [huge milestone] birthday with my Twitter/ FB friends Sarah and Simon. Incidentally, it’s also Simon’s birthday! Had our friends Leung and Nancy been able to make it, we’d have a triple birthday for the 3 guys. Weird, huh?

Yesterday and today were spent shopping for, buying and prepping all the food, cleaning up the yard, rolling the flatware, cleaning up our house, making all the signs, buying the centerpieces, and doing everything else required to have a rather large party at the house. Mom, dad and I hit up BJ’s Warehouse Club yesterday and spent a small fortune on the non-perishable stuff like the plates, flatware, soda, [11 bottles of] wine, chafing dishes, and so much more. Today mom and I went back for the food. Sure, we could’ve done it all in one trip, but it seems slightly less painful to the wallet this way. Hey, I did say slightly!

During all this, I recalculated our budget. I was really surprised to find that in the grand scheme of things, we spent a LOT less money than I thought we’d have spent. And, of course, we spent thousands of dollars less catering everything ourselves than had we used a professional catering company.

We have been extremely fortunate with our super talented friends and family. The main side dishes are being made by my [for all intent’s and purposes] sister-in-law’s grandmother. Desserts are being made by myself, my mom, my brother and my SIL’s sister. All the decorations, signage, favors, I am making, except for the centerpieces themselves. We’re getting plants and I really do have too black a thumb to have grown them. 😉 The tents and chairs were loaned to us by my SIL’s family and my brother’s union hall. And there’s more… That I’ll need to figure out when I write that recap post for submissions.

After everything is said and done, I plan on submitting the party to a few different wedding websites. Not just for the budget, but for the pictures and everything else.

Oh! That’s another thing. We had a photography budget of $1200 initially, but quickly dropped it to $600. We kinda figured we could find a student or something on Craigslist for $5-600. I know I know, that’s risky. As it turns out, my friend Moe has a friend that lives in Key West who just so happens to be an Emmy award winning photographer/ videographer. And they’re giving us the pictures/ video as our gift. Yeah… I’ll let that sink in for a bit. <3
